I have both of the amps mentioned in the subject line and am considering modding them early in '09 (though not at once-not sure which I want done first).
The Ampeg is a bit crackly and poppy, and has always been a bit too bright for my taste (I actually have 2 of them, though one has a bum power supply...that's another job !) Can anything be done for the brightness? Also, is it possible to add a rectifier valve to the existing setup with the Ampeg SJ 12R? Can it be modded to go class A?
The Epi BC30 is actually pretty clean with good tone, but I wonder about its long term reliability, and of course, I would be interested to know about any component upgrades that would raise the tone to great. Minus tremolo, I'd like to see it become a reasonable facsimile of a Marshall Bluesbreaker. Short of that, I'd just like to know that the cheap Asian components and wiring weren't working against me (ie; were replaced if deemed necesary).
Have you guys modded either of these 2 models?
